Fisker rebrands, eyes late 2016 return

Published By: The Formula Publications Team

A renewed focus, a new brand, a California-based factory and a growing market for luxury alternative-powertrain vehicles have former automaker Fisker eyeing a strong return in 2016.

But when the luxury line and its stunning plug-in hybrid offering hits dealerships, it won’t be as a Fisker Automotive offering but rather from Karma, the original handle of its first and only nameplate.

“It’s in our DNA,” the company explains. “It’s a name that respects our past, while simultaneously reinventing our future. An awareness of what we are doing, and how and why we are doing it. It’s old. It’s new.”

The Fisker story began in the late 2000s. Designed by Danish co-founder and namesake Henrik Fisker, the company was headquartered in Anaheim, Calif., but built its cars at a facility in Finland. Its one and only nameplate, Karma, hit North America after Environmental Protection Agency certification issues ended in late 2011.

The cars carried a base price that topped $100,000 and quickly became a favourite of celebrities and automotive journalists alike. Movie star Leonardo DeCaprio became an equity investor and brand ambassador while Top Gear Magazine named it luxury car of the year in late 2011.

The sleek and luxurious four-door plug-in electric hybrids featured eco-friendly extras like a solar paneled roof and reclaimed lumber accents. Powering the sedans were two 120-kW motors from battery supplier A123 and a 2.0-L turbocharged VVT DI engine.

Its retail network was a forbearer in many ways to what Tesla has done around the world with many dealerships set up in traditional retail locations like shopping malls.

Unfortunately for Fisker and its fans, financial woes hobbled production after just 2,450 Karmas rolled off the line. Its battery supplier A123 Systems filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2012.

Confounding the drama that month was the destruction of the 338 units parked at Port Newark, New Jersey when Hurricane Sandy pounded the north-eastern U.S. coastline.

Recalls, vehicle fires, funding missteps and unfortunate twists of fate eventually forced the company to file for bankruptcy in 2013. Chinese auto parts giant Wanxiang Group acquired Fisker’s assets for $149.2 million (U.S.) in 2014 with the goal of restarting the company under the Karma banner.

Intentions took a large step to fruition this summer when Wanxiang inked an 11-year lease on a factory in Moreno Valley, Calif.

Units rolling off the line there could reportedly be offered for sale as early as the middle of next year.

Exactly what will follow in terms of product remains a debatable topic. Aside from an updated Karma, analysts and industry watchers are wondering what car will come next if its sales market returns.

Former co-owner Fisker has previously stated Wanxiang employs upwards of 20 of the brand’s original designers and owns several of his designs as a part of the Chapter 11 purchase.

Norman Hebert, chief of Quebec’s Groupe Park Avenue dealership group, was one of only four Canadian Fisker retailers during its first run. He says that despite the passage of time, demand remains surprisingly high for the models he characterizes as timeless.

“I think we were the only dealer in Canada that continued to service their customers. We were only in business about six months and sold close to 30 vehicles,” he explains. “It seems sometimes there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t have customers looking for used Fiskers. We are very excited to have that brand come back.”

The market for expensive, alternatively powered cars has certainly grown in the past few years. Tesla says it has pre-sold the first 15,000 units of its new Model X while numerous hybrid and electric offerings are beginning to flow forth from brands like Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Audi and Lexus.

While questions remain about how its retail network will develop, becoming production ready and gaining certification will have to be the first of many vital steps to any kind of major comeback.

Should I Change the Thermostat?

Schmidt/iStock/Thinkstock

Unless an engine overheats or fails to reach normal operating temperature after being driven for several miles, the thermostat that regulates the flow of coolant is probably working properly. Thermostats generally last for years — even for the lifetime of a vehicle — so why bother changing it?
Indeed, if it appears to be working, there probably isn't need for a new thermostat. However, if you're having other cooling system maintenance performed, such as replacing the coolant and/or the radiator hoses on a vehicle that's been in service for several years, it could be a good idea to replace the thermostat at the same time for peace of mind. That's particularly true if the upper radiator hose is being removed, as that's where many thermostats are located.
Aside from this type of preventive maintenance, a thermostat doesn't need to be replaced unless it stops opening and closing when it's supposed to. If it sticks in the closed position, that traps coolant in the engine so that it overheats. If it sticks in the open position, the coolant will constantly circulate through the engine and radiator, which can prevent the engine from reaching full operating temperature (and full efficiency) and reduce heat output from the climate system.
Among the signs that a thermostat isn't working are an engine that overheats or runs hotter than usual, or a cabin heater that fails to produce sufficient warm air. A faulty thermostat may also trigger the check engine light. Because these symptoms can be caused by other problems, the entire cooling system should be inspected by a pro before deciding to replace the thermostat.
Not getting enough heat in the interior is mainly a comfort issue, but overheating can cause serious engine damage and shouldn't be ignored. Most vehicles have a temperature gauge that gives a constant reading of the cooling system temperature, ranging from "C" to "H" or blue to red. In modern cars, the needle or bar graph will come to rest dead center, or just a notch or so toward the cold side, when the engine has reached optimum temperature. Cars with this gauge might also have a warning light for when the engine is running hotter than normal.
Thermostat-JW-Carscom.jpg

An increasing number of cars do away with the gauge and have a high-temperature warning light, either alone or supplemented by a separate indicator — typically a blue icon of a thermometer sitting in water — that comes on when you start a cold engine and stays lit until it reaches the proper operating temperature. If this indicator stays illuminated, there's a good chance the thermostat has stuck open.
A gauge can give a driver an early heads-up that something is wrong, but a warning light might not come on until the engine is so hot it needs to be turned off immediately to prevent damage.

Halloween Safety Is No Trick

By Courtney Messenbaugh  on October 28, 2015
 kids-walking_3.2.jpg

Cars.com illustration by Paul Dolan

With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, the number of partygoers and trick-or-treaters roaming the streets by foot and by car is sure to soar. It's a time that should be nothing but fun, but according to these scary facts, Halloween can quickly turn into a nightmare.
Related: More Safety News
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists Halloween as consistently one of the top three nights for pedestrian injuries and fatalities. For kids, the statistics are even deadlier. Kids are twice as likely to be killed by a car while walking on Halloween than any other night of the year, according to Safe Kids Worldwide.  Deaths related to drunken drivers are also up: More than 115 people were killed by drunken drivers on Halloween night between 2009 and 2013, NHTSA reports.
No, we here at Cars.com are not going as Debbie Downers this year for Halloween. We love Halloween, but we want it to be safe for everyone, so use the following tips to keep you and yours safe this spooktacular night. You can thank us in candy later.

If you're driving

  • Slow down! Pay particular attention when driving in residential areas where pedestrian traffic is likely to be heavy. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than two times as likely to be killed if they're hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph. What seems like a small reduction in speed — 10 mph — can be the difference between life and death.
  • Remember that the kids are excited, excitable and sometimes unpredictable. Keep your eyes on the road and reduce any distractions inside your car (that's right, stop texting or live tweeting during your drive, on Halloween and every day)!
  • If you're behind the wheel, you better be sober. We don't need to explain this one.
  • If you're not sober, have a sober friend drive, grab a ride-sharing service, a taxi or hop on some public transportation.

For trick-or-treaters and their parents/guardians

  • When suiting up, avoid costumes that drag along the ground and could potentially trip someone. Make sure masks don't obscure vision. Seek costumes in light or bright colors that are easier for cars to see. There are even some costumes that light up on their own, delighting little ones and making them safer.
  • Let it glow! Apply reflective tape to children's costumes, jackets or treat sacks. Bring along a flashlight (don't forget to check the batteries before you head out!) to illuminate your path or even adorn the children with some of the glow necklaces or glow sticks that are found in abundance in the dollar section at your favorite store.
  • Review routes and safety precautions with younger and older children alike. Older children who are on their own should let their parents know the route they're travelling and have an agreed upon time to come home. Everyone should stay on sidewalks, use crosswalks to cross the streets and be vigilant about looking for automotive traffic from all directions.
  • All together now! Adults or an older teenager should accompany younger trick-or-treaters. AAA suggests that youngsters have a chaperone until age 12. Older kids should travel in groups and stay together — it's more fun together anyhow.
  • Enjoy yourselves. Halloween is supposed to be and genuinely is, fun.
Once everyone is home safely, allow the kids a few pieces of candy before bed (after you've checked to be sure it's safe, of course) and then carry on with binge-watching old horror films while binge-eating some of the wee ones' candy. They won't even notice.

New interest in used vehicles

Used vehicles are hot commodities these days, as local buyers take advantage of low interest rates and more American dealers are cross-border shopping to take advantage of the high-valued U.S. dollar, industry officials say.
"The demand for used vehicles has just been tremendous," Dilawri Group CEO Ashok Dilawri said in an interview, adding it's the strongest he's seen in at least five or six years.
He estimated sales of used vehicles are running at least five to 10 per cent ahead of last year for his group of seven dealerships, and that the increase would be even greater if they had more pre-owned vehicles to sell.
"The supply is so limited, because what is happening is there are buyers from the south who are snapping up everything you put in the marketplace," Dilawri said.
He said the demand for used vehicles is so strong south of the border, U.S. dealers who previously wouldn't look at anything that was more than three years old are now purchasing vehicles from local auction houses that are 10 or 12 years old.
"Especially (pickup) trucks and SUVs (sport utility vehicles). Everybody is looking for them, because the demand is so high on those things."
A Scotiabank report released Friday said sales of pre-owned vehicles through Canadian dealerships are at their highest level in nearly a decade, and are expected to top the previous annual record of three million units set in 2011.
It said while Canadians are being drawn to the dealerships by low interest rates, which make car loans more affordable, the weak Canadian dollar has also made cross-border shopping a highly lucrative option for American auto dealers.
It said Statistics Canada data shows exports of used vehicles to the U.S. began to take off once the loonie fell below 90 cents (US). After more than doubling in the first six months of 2015, they soared by a staggering 155 per cent (year over year) during the July-August period when the loonie approached 76 cents (US), its lowest level in more than a decade.
The bank said that after the first eight months of 2015, nearly 23,000 Canadian vehicles had been exported to the United States, compared with 15,600 in all of 2014.
A local spokesman for Adesa Canada, which sells used vehicles online and through a network of auction houses across the country, said U.S. dealers have purchased at least 25 per cent of the roughly 55,000 vehicles it has been selling each month this year.
"Last week, we had a buyer from Texas who bought almost 500 units in two days," Gregg Maidment, Adesa's vice-president and general manager for Western Canada, said in an interview.
Maidment said while U.S. dealers were initially interested mainly in pickup trucks and SUVs, "Now it's gone across the board."
He noted the same thing happened in the early part of the new millennium, when the loonie was worth even less than it is today. But this time it's happening on an even bigger scale, because U.S. and other foreign dealers can now make their Canadian purchases online.
"Most of it is now done over the Internet. They can just click and buy the vehicle they need and have it shipped to them," Maidment said, adding Adesa has 20,000 buyers a day from 105 countries bidding on vehicles through its website.
"Because it's a worldwide buyer base now, people are able to, in many cases, get more than they expected for their car because it's live, competitive bidding," he added.
Maidment noted while Adesa sells used vehicles on behalf of individual car owners, it doesn't sell to the public. He also noted it's mainly dealers and dealer groups who are buying vehicles in Canada.
"You're not seeing (U.S.) consumers coming up here to look for a car."
The general manager for one local used-car dealership, Auto Gallery of Canada, said it's also been approached this year by American dealers looking to buy some of its pre-owned vehicles.
"And it doesn't matter if it's a small car or a truck. They don't care," Harvey Brennan said. "But we don't do that (sell to U.S. dealers), because we want to keep that business here."
The president of Manitoba's largest dealership group -- Birchwood Automotive Group -- said Birchwood hasn't been approached yet by any U.S. dealers. But Steve Chipman said Birchwood is always looking for ways to grow its sales, so it's contacting some U.S. dealers to see if they're interested in buying some of its pre-owned stock.
Because used trucks and SUVs are getting hard to come by, Birchwood Chevrolet took out a full-page newspaper advertisement last Friday stating, "We want your truck!" and "We will pay you more for your vehicle!"
Asked if people are responding, Chipman said, "They're starting to. There are people phoning, and we've taken some trades in and sold (them) some new vehicles."

Recall Alert: 2014-2015 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra and 2015 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe

  15_Chevrolet_Silverado_Recall.jpg

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 3,100 model-year 2014-15 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks manufactured between Jan. 24, 2014, and Feb. 26, 2014; and model-year 2015 Chevrolet Suburban SUVs manufactured on Feb. 12, 2014, and Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs manufactured between Feb. 6, 2014, and Feb. 13, 2014
The Problem: The ignition lock actuator may bind, making turning the key difficult or causing the ignition to get stuck in the Start position. If this occurs, the ignition may suddenly snap back into the Accessory position, causing a loss of engine, steering and braking power; this increases the risk of a crash in which the airbags may not deploy, increasing the risk of an injury.
The Fix: Dealers will replace the ignition lock housing for free.
What Owners Should Do: GM has not yet provided an owner-notification schedule. Owners can call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782 for more info. Owners can also call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or go to www.safercar.gov.

The 2016 Toyota Prius

2016 Toyota Prius red, at reveal event, front side profilt http://www.autoblog.com/2015/09/09/2016-toyota-prius-official-photos/

BEYOND POSSIBLE: THE SKY'S THE LIMIT FOR THE ALL-NEW 2016 PRIUS AT LAS VEGAS WORLD PREMIERE EVENT
  • Striking exterior design ushers in new hybrid era
  • New platform and rear double wishbone suspension dial up driving dynamics
  • Ten percent fuel economy improvement on core models; highest MPG without a plug
  • First vehicle based on Toyota's New Global Architecture
  • Toyota Safety Sense system available among other safety enhancements

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 8, 2015 - - The same vehicle that pioneered the hybrid category just disrupted the status quo again. The all-new, fourth-generation Prius starred in a spectacular evening production of music, food and special effects to celebrate an industry icon in a way that was anything but expected.

More than 350 journalists, social influencers and Toyota guests watched the all-new 2016 Prius elevate into the Las Vegas night sky. After almost twenty years of shaping the world view on alternative energy vehicles, and more than 3.5 million global sales, Prius is setting out to change the world again.

Today's consumers expect environmental credentials, and the new Prius delivers. Smaller, lighter hybrid system components, higher-energy density in the batteries, and an internal combustion engine touting ground-breaking thermal efficiency (more than forty percent), contribute to a significant advancement in fuel economy. With an expected ten percent improvement in EPA estimated MPG on core models, Prius will offer best-in-class fuel economy among vehicles without a plug. A soon-to-be unveiled Eco model will achieve an even greater improvement, strengthening Toyota's leadership in hybrid fuel efficiency.

But it's not just about MPG anymore. Today's customers want all the traditional benefits of a hybrid, but don't want to compromise on looks and performance. So Toyota upgraded the Prius inside and out to deliver the complete package - emotional styling, smarter technology and impressive MPG, in a vehicle that's more fun to drive than ever.

"Prius set the global benchmark for hybrids, but now is breaking its own boundaries with more engaging style and fun-to-drive dynamics," said Bill Fay, group vice president and general manager, Toyota Division. "What was once a rational purchase that for many customers focused on fuel economy, is now so much more. This Prius will invite new drivers into the category by delivering an impressive look and feel, built on the foundation of safety and eco- consciousness that define the vehicle's heritage."

Easy on the Eyes

The Prius' exterior has been completely reimagined. From the side, it is longer and sleeker with the overall outline evoking an athletic shape. Inspired by a runner in the starting blocks, the sporty design conveys a feeling of forward motion.

The hood is lower and the distinctive roof peak has been moved forward. Bold character lines run along the side from the front fenders – one just above the sill that sweeps up towards the rear fender, while the upper crease morphs into the rear spoiler, which has been lowered.

The use of new standard LED headlamps minimizes the Prius' front fascia and, at the same time, provides an arresting lighting display which helps define the vehicle's character. The unique and striking rear combination lamps express the distinctive lines of the Prius from the rear spoiler to the trailing edges of the sides.

A palette of seven exterior colors includes an all-new Toyota hue, "Hypersonic Red." This new color utilizes a newly developed treatment process, which results in a deep and vibrant luster highlighting the external forms.

Need a Hug?

The Prius' new, premium interior adopts advanced technology complemented by features that are functional, fun and have high visual impact. The wrap-around dash design, form-hugging seats, ease of controls and improved visibility put the driver in complete control.

Once inside, drivers will feel immediately comfortable and impressed by styling cues that are unique in the industry. The wide instrument panel, seamlessly designed to be both functional and beautiful, gives a sense of comfort and spaciousness. Available premium white ornamentation in the lower sections of the cabin is reminiscent of fine bone china.

Efficient Development from the Start

The 2016 Prius is the first global vehicle to implement Toyota's New Global Architecture (TNGA). TNGA aims to greatly improve core vehicle performance and enhance product appeal through an integrated development program for powertrain components and vehicle platforms. Development of vehicles is being grouped to promote strategic sharing of components with the goal of improving resource efficiency by better than twenty percent. Resources will be directed into developing advanced technologies, and most importantly even further strengthening product appeal.

A Fun-to-Drive Hybrid? A "Wish" Come True

Engineered from the ground up, the new Prius is 2.4 inches longer, 0.6 inches wider and 0.8 inches lower than the model it replaces, providing a planted on-road presence while delivering more occupant and cargo room.

Hallmarks of TNGA, a lower center of gravity and a more responsive suspension package, dial up the driving excitement. In fact, the height of the Prius' front badge is exactly the same as that of Scion's FR-S sports car – a remarkable achievement in height and mass reduction.

The all-new rear double wishbone suspension produces a better connection to the road, providing greater control and feedback in all driving conditions. A more rigid body helps improve responsiveness while cornering. From winding mountain roads to the wide boulevards downtown, the new Prius stays connected to the road, without sacrificing ride quality and occupant comfort.

Safety First

TNGA also provides a more rigid structural framework to help enhance occupant protection in the event of a collision. The high strength upper body is designed to distribute frontal collision impact energy. Plus, the Prius will be among the first U.S. models to offer Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), a new multi-feature advanced safety package anchored by automated pre-collision braking. TSS bundles cutting edge safety technologies including:
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Automatic High Beams
Available on the new Prius, Toyota aims to make Toyota Safety Sense available across nearly the entire vehicle lineup by the end of 2017.

Setting the Stage for the Future of Mobility

It started in 1992 with a vision for the future – mobility in harmony with society. Prius, which means "to go before" changed the way we move about the world, and changed the automotive industry forever. More than two decades and over 8 million Toyota hybrid sales later, the all-new, no compromises 2016 Prius stands side by side with its sibling, the hydrogen powered Mirai, poised to change the game yet again. The new Prius will arrive in dealerships early next year.

Are There Any Mechanical Benefits to Cleaning an Engine?

https://www.cars.com/articles/are-there-any-mechanical-benefits-to-cleaning-an-engine-1420681075630/
By Rick Popely  on September 9, 2015
CleaningEngine-Wimage72-iStock-Thinstock.jpg

A clean engine compartment makes a used car look newer and better maintained. Some shops that perform engine cleaning services claim a clean engine even runs a little cooler because the gunk formed by dirt, oil and grease seals in some heat.
Appearances aside, does an engine that sparkles like new run any better than one that's grimy from normal use? Probably not.
Though it is true that oily, greasy dirt that accumulates on an engine can trap some heat, it's doubtful it would be enough to cause an engine to overheat or even run hotter than normal. If an engine overheats, the probable cause is more likely in the cooling system, or because the vehicle is towing or carrying too much weight or some other issue unrelated to the cleanliness of the engine bay.
However, there are benefits to cleaning a dirty engine. First, it can help determine where oil or grease is coming from, such as a leaky valve-cover gasket, so that a small problem can be isolated and repaired before it becomes a big one. In addition, because oil and grease can accelerate the wear of rubber hoses and plastic parts, cleaning off the gunk may save on repairs. And if you're the type who likes to do some minor maintenance, such as checking the oil level or accessory belts, a clean engine means your hands and clothes are less likely to get dirty.
Many mechanics and detail shops recommend using a degreaser and tools such as a vacuum with a small nozzle, compressed air or a toothbrush to get at hard-to-reach spots. Those are preferable to blasting an engine with a high-pressure hose or steam cleaning an engine, because moisture can damage electrical parts.
The cosmetic appeal of a clean engine will probably be the biggest payback. Most used cars are thoroughly detailed before being put up for sale, including many sold by private owners, so buyers have come to expect to see a clean engine when they shop. A dirty engine on a used car will hurt its curb appeal.

IIHS Releases New Crop of Front Crash Prevention Scores

IIHS Releases New Crop of Front Crash Prevention Scores
In 2013, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety added a new component to its Top Safety Pick Plus designation; only vehicles with front crash prevention systems could qualify for the agency's highest safety score. Automakers are taking notice. Once only found as optional equipment on high-end cars, the IIHS says that some form of forward collision warning is available on half of the models in its database.
In IIHS' most recent round of testing, more than a dozen new models earned the highest rating of superior for front crash prevention systems. The agency rates vehicles as basic, advanced or superior depending on the type of automatic braking system and how effective it is in tests at 12 and 25 mph.
Related: IIHS Launches Crash-Prevention Ratings Program
Acura leads the list of new models that earn a superior front crash prevention rating. The 14 new models include the:
  • 2016 Acura ILX
  • 2016 Acura MDX
  • 2016 Acura RDX
  • 2016 Acura RLX
  • 2016 BMW X3 (when equipped with a camera- and radar-based system)
  • 2015 Chrysler 300
  • 2015 Dodge Charger
  • 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class (both Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Pre-Safe Brake equipped versions)
  • 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA (both Collision Prevention Assist Plus and Distronic Plus equipped versions)
  • 2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  • 2016 Mazda6
  • 2016 Mazda CX-5
Five new models earn an advanced rating. They include the:
  • 2016 BMW X3 (when equipped with BMW's camera-only system called City Braking Function)
  • 2016 Volkswagen Golf
  • 2016 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen
  • 2016 Volkswagen Jetta
  • 2015 Volkswagen Touareg
IIHS commends Mercedes-Benz for being the first automaker to offer a standard front crash prevention system that earns a superior rating; its Collision Prevention Assist Plus system is standard on the 2015 C-Class, CLA and E-Class.
Other automakers have made improvements to their systems in order to raise their rating. The 2015 Mazda6's system, for example, earned an advanced rating; improvements for model-year 2016 bumped it up to a superior score.
"Most motorists won't be riding in driverless cars anytime soon. In the shorter term, automatic braking is an accessible technology that's within reach for many drivers. We've seen an uptick in the number of luxury and mainstream models with available autobrake. That's a welcome sign for highway safety and helps pave the way for the eventual deployment of fully autonomous vehicles," David Zuby, IIHS' executive vice president and chief research officer, said in a statement.

Not just another custom rod, the big V-Twin features an all-original design built with handmade parts and powered by a unique 2032cc motor developed with S&S Cycle good for nearly 122 hp and 122 lb-ft of torque sent to the rear wheel through a 6-speed Baker Drivetrains transmission.
The motor breathes through a unique downdraft induction system that channels air from intakes next to the headlamps through the center of its twin fuel cells, which take 66 hours to produce from a 534-pound hunk of billet aluminum.
The bike itself weighs just 538 pounds, thanks in part to a set of carbon fiber wheels. LED lighting is featured front and rear, and the retro-futuristic bodywork would look right at home on the streets of Mega City.
You may need to cut a deal with the devil to buy one, however: The price is an eye-opening $78,000.

$3,670 pickup truck unveiled in India

 http://global.fncstatic.com/static/managed/img/Leisure/2009/multix-876.jpg
Meet the Multix. It looks like an auto rickshaw that has been to the gym. But this mini-pickup truck is more than that.
Targeted at small businessmen, the Multix can also double-up as a generator to light up homes, power tools or even run a DJ console.
A joint venture between U.S.-based Polaris Industries and India’s Eicher Motors, the vehicle is designed to be small enough to steer through congested city roads in the South Asian country, but still it comes with an independent suspension system and 225 millimeters of ground clearance to tackle potholed or flooded streets.
The Multix will be offered for test rides from July in 30 Indian cities with customer deliveries starting in August.
Dealership prices start at around 233,000 rupees ($3,670.)
Eicher Polaris Pvt.—the equal joint venture company formed in July 2012—says the Multix went through rigorous testing, equivalent to traveling 1.8 million kilometers in both the U.S. and India. They say the vehicle has a “tubular frame structure and roll-over protection system that provides structural stability and reinforced safety.”
With its 511-cubic-centimeter diesel engine, the Multix can travel more than 28 kilometers to a liter, according to the companies. Its dual-cab can transport up to five people and has up to 1,918 liters of luggage space—big enough for a family vacation.

Ward's Auto names its 10 Best Engines for 2015

Ward's Auto names its 10 Best Engines for 2015

Hellcat (Dodge)
It's the end of the year, which in the auto industry means various 'of the year' lists are appearing to sum up the most significant new cars and trucks of the past 12 months. In addition, one of the most watched parts of this automotive award season is the annual Ward's Auto 10 Best Engines list.

The jurors at Ward's evaluated 37 new or improved powertrains and—showing automakers' current emphasis on fuel economy—that group included 15 turbocharged four-cylinder engines, four electric powertrains, and the first-ever hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain to be eligible for the award. They made up what the jurors called the most diverse field ever.
Here are Ward's 10 best engines for 2015:
  • 127-kilowatt electric motor (BMW i3)
  • 6.2-liter OHV V-8 (Chevrolet Corvette Stingray)
  • 6.2-liter Supercharged OHV V-8 (Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat)
  • 1.0-liter Turbocharged DOHC 3-cylinder (Ford Fiesta)
  • 100-kW Fuel Cell (Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell Vehicle)
  • 1.5-liter Turbocharged DOHC 3-cylinder (MINI Cooper)
  • 3.0-liter Turbodiesel DOHC V-6 (Ram 1500 EcoDiesel)
  • 2.0-liter Turbocharged H-4 (Subaru WRX)
  • 1.8-liter Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Volkswagen Golf)
  • 2.0-liter Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Volvo S60)
The supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat V-8 from Dodge has generated plenty of buzz everywhere else, and with 707 horsepower it certainly has the muscle to be considered a great engine. It's joined by another 6.2-liter V-8, the naturally-aspirated small block from the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, which was eligible again because it made the list last year. The 2015 Subaru WRX's boxer four also made the cut.
The two V-8s were outliers. They each have just over twice the displacement of the next biggest engine-—the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 from Ram—and the Chevy small block was the only naturally-aspirated engine to make the list this year.
Stretching the definition of "engine" were the BMW i3's electric motor—the second electric powertrain to make the list—and Hyundai's fuel-cell powertrain.

Automakers are constantly creating new features for your whole family, even the four-legged members. In 2015, Americans will spend an estimated $60.59 billion on pets, according to the American Pet Products Association, $2.55 billion more than in 2014.
That's no surprise as 65 percent of U.S. households own a pet, encompassing 79.7 million homes, the National Pet Owners Survey notes.

A wide range of products are available to help make traveling with your pet easier, though most are designed to fit particular car models. The following are offered for Subaru, Jeep, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen models:
  • Ramps allow pets an easier way to enter and exit the car
  • Restraints keep pets in place for safer, less-hectic travel
  • Crates ensure that your pet will not roam around the vehicle or disrupt passengers
  • Seat covers help keep upholstery clean and damage-free
  • Easy-to-clean flooring and mats provide hard surfaces that can be washed easily

Beyond pet-specific products, some cars offer useful convenience features that make it easy to travel with pets. These include:
  • Flip-up backseat lets you transform passenger seating into an open space for pets.
Available in: Ford F-150, Honda HR-V

  • Split-folding backseat, a common feature, lets either side of the backseat fold for additional pet space while retaining some passenger seating.
Available in: Nissan Rogue, Subaru Outback

  • Low lift-over height makes it easier for a dog to hop into the cargo area.
Available in: Honda Fit, Volkswagen Golf SportWagen

  • Rear air conditioning with separate controls to help maintain an optimal temperature for your pets, which may be different than what passengers in front want.
Available in: Chrysler Town & Country, Toyota Sienna
While automakers typically offer specialized products, many cars can accommodate pet gear you already own. No matter what car you're considering, be sure to bring the pet products you use, whether it's a crate, a carrier or a ramp, to the dealership to make sure a potential new car is compatible with the things your pet needs.

Why Do I Need to Rotate My Tires?

Cars.com by Rick Popely

Virtually every vehicle manufacturer, tire manufacturer and tire dealer recommends you periodically rotate your tires so they wear evenly and last longer, but is it really necessary?
Many motorists apparently don't think so, as tire rotation is one of the more neglected routine maintenance items. You can even spot many vehicles that suffer neglect: They're the ones with front wheels that are nearly black from accumulated brake dust. The front brakes are larger than the rears on most vehicles and do 75 percent or more of the braking, so they generate more pad dust.
Whether your vehicle has front-, rear-, all- or four-wheel drive, your tires benefit from a change of scenery from time to time because the weight and workload they carry is unevenly distributed among the four wheels. That makes them wear unevenly.
A majority of vehicles on the road are front-wheel drive or have all-wheel-drive systems that operate in front-drive most of the time. The front tires carry an extraordinary load on those vehicles.
First, they carry far more weight than the rear tires because the engine and transmission are usually mounted transversely over the front axle. When you apply the brakes, more weight shifts forward, further adding to the load. The front tires also endure wear and tear from powering and steering the vehicle, and they bear the brunt of cornering forces, when weight shifts to the outside of a turn. In contrast, the rear tires on front-drive vehicles are just along for the ride.
Rear- and four-wheel-drive vehicles spread more of the load to the rear tires because they drive the vehicle, but the fronts still carry a significant burden, including steering and more weight.
How frequently tires should be rotated depends on the vehicle and the manufacturer's recommended interval, which should be listed in the service section of the owner's manual. A good rule of thumb is to rotate them at least as often as you change the oil, or more often if the oil-service interval is, say, 10,000 miles. For example, if you drive 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year, you should rotate the tires twice a year.
The rotation pattern also depends on the vehicle, but for most front-drive vehicles a typical pattern is to move the front tires to the rear on the same side and crisscross the rear tires to the front. The pattern might be different for rear- and four-wheel-drive vehicles and will be different on cars that have directional tires or different size tires in the front and rear.
With directional tires, for example, the tires have to stay on the same side and only move between front and back. If the front and rear tires are of different sizes, they are rotated to the other side of the same axle.

How to Keep Your Car's Resale Value High

Once a car leaves a dealer's lot, its resale value starts to decrease. There are a few key factors that determine resale value, according to experts at Black Book and Vincentric, two companies in the used-car valuation business. They are:
  • Age, which automatically decreases a car's resale value with each passing year.
  • Mileage affects value if it's higher or lower than the average for your car. Extremely low mileage can affect a car's value, too, as it may hint at a problem that prevents it from being driven, or may lead to problems from not being driven regularly.
  • Condition is determined by visible paint or body damage, interior damage and signs of wear, frame damage, mechanical operation, tire condition and accident history. The condition of your car is an important part of resale value, and cosmetic damage instantly decreases it. It also indicates that it's more than likely that there are some mechanical issues, too. If there are both cosmetic and mechanical issues, the value will drop rather quickly.
  • Market condition is another thing to consider, according to Vincentric President David Wurster. Market condition sets the resale price at the point where supply and demand meets. For example, there will be a higher demand for hybrid and fuel-efficient cars when gas prices are high, which increases their value, while convertibles will see more demand in the spring and summer months.
  • Location is only a factor if a vehicle is more or less popular in a certain area. Trucks, for example, are more popular in Texas; compact cars are more popular in New York. The value of your car won't be as high in lower-demand areas where it may be harder to sell.
The downward march of a car's value is a phenomenon that, for the majority of cars, can't be stopped. There are, however, steps you can take to make sure your car is worth as much as possible when you want to sell it.
  • Perform regular maintenance and follow your car's maintenance schedule. This includes oil changes, tire rotations and cosmetic upkeep.
  • Save your service records. These will verify that you have taken good care of your car, and they can also help determine when it will need to be serviced again.
  • Make sure all damage is properly repaired before you try to sell or trade in your car.
  • Keep the exterior and interior clean. Excessive wear and tear will decrease the value even if the car runs perfectly. "No one wants a scratched car with a sticky interior," Wurster said.
  • If possible, park in a garage, which will reduce the chance of weather damage and vandalism. If garage parking isn't an option, a car cover can provide some protection from the elements.
While resale value is partly determined by factors you can't control, like high gas prices or a forthcoming redesigned version of your car, if you take the time now to show your car some tender loving care you can have extra money in your pocket later.

Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep Recalls: What Owners Should Do

Part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's civil penalties on Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which could amount to $105 million, involve several programs for owners of affected Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles. If you have an older Jeep Liberty or Grand Cherokee, a late-model Ram or Dodge Dakota pickup truck or a 2009 Chrysler Aspen SUV or 2009 Dodge Durango SUV, this applies to you.
Related: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to Pay Up to $105 Million in Recall-Related Penalties
NHTSA's consent order requires FCA to conduct three separate programs, the most significant of which has the company buying back tens of thousands of trucks and SUVs from owners. None of the programs will apply to owners who already got their cars fixed for a fuel system recall on the Jeeps or a suspension or steering system recall on the others.
  • The first program is a $100 incentive for Jeep SUV owners to get their recalled vehicle fixed.
  • The second is a trade-in bonus for a smaller group of SUVs.
  • The third is the buyback program for certain Ram and Dodge pickup trucks plus the Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUV.
How do I know if my car has been fixed for these specific recalls?
Find your car's vehicle identification number, which is usually etched in the windshield's lower driver's side corner, and enter it onto NHTSA's VIN search tool vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/vinLookup. If your vehicle has an open (that is, unfixed) recall under campaign numbers 13V-038, 13V-252, 13V-527 or 13V-529, then it's eligible for these offers. We strongly suggest you get the recall taken care of as soon as possible.
What cars will get the $100 incentive to have their recalls fixed?
The consent order requires FCA to offer $100 gift cards toward owners of these vehicles:
  • 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs
  • 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty SUVs
The Liberty and 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee are under a formal 2013 recall for problems in the fuel system that could cause fires in certain rear-end crashes.
The 1999-2004 Grand Cherokee is not under a formal recall, but NHTSA is requiring FCA to extend the $100 gift card to owners of those SUVs to have similar repairs made. A FCA spokesman said the company will repair these later Jeeps "as part of a customer satisfaction initiative" beginning in September.
Which cars get the trade-in bonus?
Only the 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee get the trade-in bonus offer. NHTSA's consent order requires FCA to offer $1,000 over market value for those SUVs "in lieu of accepting" the recall repair. The trade-in bonus must be used toward the purchase of another FCA vehicle or toward parts or service.
Can I spend the trade-in bonus on a used car?
NHTSA's order didn't specify whether the bonus applies to new cars only or both new and used. We asked FCA spokesman Eric Mayne, and he said the automaker is "still developing the program details."
Which cars are in the buyback program?
The buyback program applies to the following vehicles:
  • 2009-2012 Ram 1500 pickup trucks built from Feb. 27, 2008, through June 30, 2009, and Dec. 1, 2009, through Oct. 20, 2011. These were recalled in 2013 for rear suspension problems.
  • 2009-2011 Dodge Dakota pickups built from Feb. 27, 2007, through June 30, 2009, and Dec. 1, 2009, through Sept. 30, 2011. These were recalled in 2013 for rear suspension problems.
  • 2009 Dodge Durango SUVs built from Jan. 3. 2008, through Dec. 18, 2008. These were recalled in 2013 for rear suspension problems.
  • 2009 Chrysler Aspen SUVs built from Jan. 3, 2008, to Dec. 18, 2008. These were recalled in 2013 for rear suspension problems.
  • 2008-2012 Ram 4500 and 5500 heavy-duty trucks built from Feb. 20, 2007, through Dec. 22, 2012. These were recalled in 2013 for problems with the steering system.
  • 2008-2012 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups with four-wheel drive, recalled in 2013 for problems with the steering system.
  • 2008-2012 Ram 3500 chassis-cab pickups with rear-wheel drive, recalled in 2013 for problems with the steering system.
  • 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Mega Cab pickups with four-wheel drive, recalled in 2013 for problems with the steering system.
You can usually find the build date by month on a sticker around the driver's doorjamb. FCA has 60 days to notify owners of the buyback offer, NHTSA says.
How much will I get for my car?
According to NHTSA, the buyback program requires FCA to give a refund of the purchase price minus depreciation plus an additional 10 percent.
What if I modified my vehicle? Will the modifications be refunded in the buyback program?
Not unless they were on the car when it was new. Any modifications made after the vehicle's retail sale won't be calculated into the purchase price, according to NHTSA.
Will these repurchased cars end up in circulation?
Some will. FCA "may remedy and resell any vehicle repurchased" under the buyback program, according to NHTSA's consent order. The automaker intends to do that for the vehicles it will buy back, Mayne said. But it won't do so for the cars that got the trade-in bonus because "they are, many of them, over 20 years old," he said. "It doesn't make economic sense to do that."
Can FCA dealers still sell unfixed vehicles?
That's unclear, as it's "subject to regulation," Mayne said. But NHTSA's order requires FCA to "develop and implement a process to deter dealer sales of unremedied vehicles subject to recall." That process must include dealer training and financial penalties from FCA.

Terrafugia digitally renders TF-X.

Terrafugia claims to offer the future of transportation but that point still looks to be years away, if ever. The company's Transition flying car has shown itself able to fly, but the even more ambitious TF-X has been in development for years with promises of vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. So far, we've only seen renderings of the sci-fi craft take to the skies, and that hasn't changed with the latest video showing the newly updated outer mold line design.

The TF-X's revised shape features a sleeker, more car-like front end design and wraparound glass. Terrafugia is still making some absolutely monumental promises about the aircraft's capabilities, though. The four-seat plane uses an engine and two electric motors for propulsion. For take off, the wings fold out from the body, and propellers on swiveling nacelles let it take to the sky vertically like a V-22 Osprey. The props then fold back once airborne, and a ducted fan starts providing thrust, at least theoretically. Terrafugia claims the TF-X could cruise at 200 miles per hour and would offer a 500-mile range.

Shelby will build 50 new Daytona Coupes for 50th anniversary

The aluminum and fiberglass Shelby American Continuation Daytona Coupes.
Carroll Shelby's continuous effort to stay at the front of the racing pack won his tiny team the FIA World Championship on July 4, 1965. The Shelby Daytona Coupe is the car that did it, the hulking shark of a race car designed specifically to achieve a higher top speed than was possible with the Cobra roadster. To celebrate the feat, Shelby American is building 50 total continuation coupes in aluminum and fiberglass.

The company picked one of the six original race cars, each one slightly different, to base the continuation models on. The aluminum versions are built to the original blueprints with a tube-frame chassis, leaf spring suspension with aluminum control arms, cold-air intake, and Wilwood brakes. Fiberglass versions get air conditioning, power steering and windows, and a coil-over suspension. The interior is black leather, set off with a big wood-rimmed steering wheel.

The cars come as rolling chassis, meaning you'll need to sort out an engine. Shelby's got you covered there, offering a 289-cubic-inch aluminum motor for extra cost. You'll need to add that price to the $349,995 for the aluminum model, or the $179,995 for the fiberglass number. They'll greet the public at Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival during Pebble Beach week on August 12, then go on display at Laguna Seca for the weekend before heading to the UK for the Goodwood Revival. The images above have all the beauty, the press release below has all the details.

SHELBY AMERICAN ANNOUNCES 50TH ANNIVERSARY COBRA DAYTONA COUPE SERIES

- 50 total 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes will be built
- Authentic aluminum and updated fiberglass versions will be offered
- America's only FIA Sports Car World Championship Celebrated

LAS VEGAS – July 15, 2015 – To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their FIA World Championship, Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI:PK) will offer a limited series of continuation Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes. Only 50 cars, available in either aluminum or fiberglass, will be built. Both versions of the car will debut at California events in August 2015.

"The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe helped a small American team beat a racing giant," said Joe Conway, Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International and CEO of Shelby American. "The tenacious Shelby American team fielded six sleek Cobra Coupes against the Ferrari juggernaut, winning the FIA Sports Car Championship on July 4, 1965. That is still the only time that an American team has captured the crown. To celebrate that achievement, we're launching a limited series of anniversary cars that bring the legendary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe back to life."

With only six original Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes built, the racecar became one of the most coveted vehicles in the world. Worth millions of dollars each, ownership of one is almost impossible.

"After the success of our 50th anniversary edition Shelby Cobra big block roadster program, we were bombarded with requests to offer a limited edition Daytona Coupe that celebrated this important milestone," said Keith Belair, Shelby American Chief Operating Officer. "We spent the last year carefully planning an aluminum car that is faithful to the six built during the 1960s. In addition, we developed an anniversary edition fiberglass version that is true to the spirit of the Coupe, but reimagined as if it had remained in production over the years."

A combination of the 50 total specially badged anniversary Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes will be built. This is the first time that Shelby has offered an aluminum continuation Daytona Coupe.

Each aluminum Coupe (serial numbers CSX9950–CSX9999) incorporates safety and performance improvements without sacrificing integrity, as they were built from original blueprints and measurements. Since each original competition car was slightly different, Shelby American chose one specification for the continuation cars that best represents all of the Coupes.

From the leaf spring suspension and tube chassis to the wooden rimmed steering wheel, the cars are period correct. While a variety of exterior colors is available, each will come equipped with a premium black leather interior, special badging, modern disc brakes and a stronger frame.
Each is a component vehicle that is built to order and can be finished by a customer or an authorized dealer; it is delivered as a rolling chassis. An aluminum block 289 c.i.d. engine that can include a Coupe's serial number is also available separately from the Shelby Engine Company.

"The legend of the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe is amazing," said Gary Schechner, Shelby American Vice President of Marketing. "When Shelby American began racing the lightweight Cobra roadster, they were dominant except on the high speed straightaways of the European circuits. Shelby American tasked Peter Brock with designing a sleeker body for the small block chassis. The result was one of the most radical and now, iconic, racecar designs of all time. Peter's design not only yielded greater top speeds, but also made the car incredibly aerodynamic and efficient."

Shelby American began work on the first Daytona Coupe (CSX2287) in Los Angeles during 1964. It quickly proved to be a winner, enabling Shelby American to dominate and win its Le Mans class that year and capture the International Manufacturer's GT Championship in 1965.

The fiberglass and aluminum cars will be unveiled at Gordon McCall's Motorworks Revival on August 12 and be displayed throughout the weekend at the Rolex Motorsports Reunion inside Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. An aluminum car will be displayed at the Goodwood Revival in the U.K. to help celebrate the anniversary of the FIA World Championship where the original Daytona Coupes will be reunited.

"Now for a limited time, a few more people will be able to enjoy a Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe," said Conway. "Whether they choose an aluminum continuation car or fiberglass version, each anniversary Daytona Coupe will be issued a Shelby American serial number for documentation in the official Shelby American Worldwide Registry. This is a rare opportunity to snag a piece of performance history."

The price of the base aluminum Shelby Daytona Coupe, not including drivetrain, is $349,995. The fiberglass continuation cars start at $179,995, not including drivetrain. Information is available at http://www.shelby.com/daytona.asp or by calling (702) 942-7325. Shelby American will be accepting deposits on a first-come, first-served basis.

Chevy Gives Silverado New Look, Transmission for 2016

To say the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is on a roll is to horribly understate the point. Amid the high-visibility plays both Ford and Ram have made with their 2015 pickups — the all-new F-150 and Ram Rebel, respectively — Chevy has quietly been plugging away, producing some of the best monthly truck sales numbers it's had in many years. According to some reports, Chevy is winning the Half-Ton Pickup Truck War.
To take advantage of that momentum, the Silverado 1500 is getting a subtle face-lift to keep the truck looking fresh. The new look is restricted to the front of the truck with a bulging new hood, a more color-integrated grille and several reshaped design cuts to the headlights and bumper.
Although it doesn't look like there will be any significant powertrain or undercarriage changes, it is possible the 2016 models will include some trim package additions and adjustments. As expected, the new eight-speed transmission (previously only available on the 6.2-liter V-8) will move through various 5.3-liter V-8 models, but will not be standard on all V-8-equipped trucks. We're guessing that's to keep the six-speed 5.3-liter Silverado prices as low as possible.
Whether this massaged look will spread to the heavy duties or to the smaller Colorado remains to be seen. Regardless, this midmodel design refresh — along with new available driver connection technology like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay — should give new buyers a few more good reasons to feel like they have something unique.
